Judd Walls and Greg Safford spent a morning on the special regulation section of the Jackson River the first weekend in November. It was an overcast morning with periodic drizzle, and we never saw another person fishing. The water was flowing extremely well and was crystal clear. Entering at the upper end (Poor Farm Road), we fished mostly streamers (Grey Ghost size 8-10) and were able to pull 6-8 fish each in just a few hours. We have consistently been able to pull nice fish (14-16 inch) out of the Jackson, and entering from the top is a much shorter walk (though still 20 minutes) to the special reg section than the Heavenly Valley approach from the bottom. It is an outstanding section of water, and the required walk seems to keep stream traffic down.
The Annual Fishing Show is canceled due to sever weather.
Greg Safford and Judson Walls spent a wonderful September Saturday on the Elk River C&R section in Monterville, WV. We stayed at the Elk River Resort and were treated like long lost friends. The owners and staff of the Elk River Resort are just very pleasant and accommodating people. The Elk River is a lovely spring-fed, freestone, but at full flow, could rival many of the classic western rivers in size. The fish were ample and large, but, on this trip, were very wary due to the clarity of the water and the low flows. Unique to this outing was our first experience with 8X and 9X tippet and flies so small they were difficult to see, let alone tie on. We used size 28 BWOs and dropped a size 32 Pheasant Tail nymph about 18 inches below. Quite the change from our Colorado trip where our streamers are measured in inches of length.
You will be astonished at the number of rainbows and browns inhabiting the large pool right at the resort’s main property and in the spring-fed ponds (that used to be a trout hatchery) right beside the fly shop and restaurant. The Elk River is consistently rated one of the best trout streams in West Virginia, and many rate it one of the best in the east. It is about a 5 hour drive from Warrenton, but if you can spend the night, well worth the time.
