April 2nd & 3rd – Rapidan Chapter’s Kids/Heritage Day

Our Kid’s Day/Heritage Day will be a two day event this year where we join up with Graves Mountain Lodge and the Virgina Department of Game and Inland Fisheries -VDGIF, along with other supporting TU Chapters, for a day along the section of Rose River at Graves Mountain Lodge.  This event will be open for kids 12 and under to fish for stocked Trout, both Saturday April 2 and Sunday April 3, accompanied by a multitude of other venues and exhibits on both days.

In addition to our own TU Membership Table, we’ll have fly tying demonstrations, fly casting demonstrations and instructions, and and stream/aquatic educational demonstration.  Our Chapter  originated the Kid’s Day event years ago, and have since teamed up with Jimmy Graves of Graves Mountain, and the VDGIF for this annual Event – - so, for those of you not serving on the support effort for this event, please bring your families and come join us for a great time!!

Jimmy Graves shares, that included for 2011, the Piedmont Chapter of the Wild Turkey Ferderation will be on hand again.  They will have a turkey calling contest for kids 12 and under as well as kids 13 -17 years old.  They will also be doing archery and air-rifle instuctions; and  Duck’s Unlimited will be doing duck calling.  Many other craft vendors will be set up as well for 2011.

What is Kid’s Day/Heritage Day?  An extension of our Chapter’s original Kid’s Day, where we have joined with Graves Mountain Lodge, and VGDIF for a fun- filled day with fishing, activities and education.  A special section of the Rose River (in front of Graves Mountain Lodge) will be stocked with Trout for kids 12 and under,  to enjoy/learn to fish and keep a 6 fish limit.  Kids only at this location Parents!!  The event will open up to fishing at 9 a.m.

There will also be sections of the Rose River and along the Robinson River, for adult fishing.

This year other activities will provide education and hands-on activities – Harry Murray from Harry Murray Fly Shop, will give a 45 minute talk on fly fishing and also give a demonstration.  Rapidan Chapter of Trout Unlimited, supported by other members of other TU Chapters will have fly tying stations, fly casting demonstrations, fly casting classes at a pond for children and adults, insect monitoring in the stream, and helping kids with fishing on the Rose River.  The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will bring their taxidermy mounted animals for display.  Virginia State University will display live fish, cold and warm water fish.  Shenandoah National Park will have a display about fishing in the park.  Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation Districts will show macroinvertibrates and have their soil tunnel.  DEQ and 4-H Adventure Club, Old Rag Naturalists will be making and finding wildlife tracks, Plus other organizations will have booths with displays, information and activities.
