November 2, 2011–Rapidan Chapter Meeting Minutes

Hi All-The Rapidan TU chapter meeting was held at 7:30pm Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Sun Trust Bank in Warrenton. Eighteen members were present. The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm, and after introductions around the room, the speaker (Larry Dunn)  was introduced by Chuck Hoysa (also JMSWCD).

Larry Dunn manages the John Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Fauquier County. His office’s job is to protect soil & water; specifically to provide technical assistance to farmers, establish soil conservation practices, and provide conservation education. He basically gets livestock out of the water/creeks through road hardening, fences & riparian buffers(35′), wells, amd ice-free geothermal watering troughs. He has a annual budget of ~$600K.

No treasurer’s report, although the balance should be the same as last month($10, 532). Doug-Please make out recurring expenditure budget for next year for January meeting. We need to spend about $5K, so email your recommendations to RobP(rapidantupresident@gmail.com).

Andy Holmaas has moved to Monterey,VA, near Jackson River.

The chapter Christmas party is 6pm Saturday, December 10 at President Rob Paul’s home:46 Ridge Pointe Lane, Frederkicksburg, VA 22405. Please bring a side dish or snacks. “Member of year” award will be presented at the party. Email nominations to Rob.

Fishing Show/LarryW/FredK-Raffle tickets prizes are progressing and tickets are planned to be distributed at chapter Christmas party and at January meeting.

The venue for the February 25, 2012 show is Fauquier County Fairgrounds, Inc on 6209 Old Auburn Road(off Meetz Road south of route 29) in Warrenton. It can accommodate 50 tables(38-8′ tables), but 19-6′ additional tables(non-profit groups, food, & chapter support) are needed. Facility cost is $750. We need to setup and takedown the tables & chairs, and clean the facility(~ Middleburg). ). A portable seminar wall needs to be made. Thirty eight vendor letters/registration forms were mailed(10/26).

Education/TIC/ChuckH-Trout are now ~1″ long, chiller was repaired, need new filter(~$150), and we have 8 schools participating in program.

Camp Special Love/BillH–putting together a recommendation for ~$250 budget.

Membership/JoseV-327 chapter members, with 287 active. Jose will work on reducing number of expiring memberships.

Tri-state TU Conservation/Fishing Camp/MikeMc-Camp went very smooth last year with 24 attendees starting & completing camp. National TU had difficulty placing students in local chapters. Boots are needed for kids for next year, and he will put together a budget/Cabela’s.

Bylaws/RobP-Email changes to RobP.

Volunteer Hours/KevinD-Kevin is revising volunteer form for January meeting to get more details.

The National TU meeting in September 2012 is in Asheville,NC. This will be a special opportunity for members to attend/MarciaW, and for chapter to pay part of expenses.

Elections: The following persons were elected; Rob Paul/Pres, Chuck Hoysa/VPres., DougF/Treasurer, FredK/Secretary, Amy Orr/Conservation, ChuckH/Education-TIC, JoseV/Membership/, & LarryW/Fund Raising.

Dan Spethman offered to show chapter Sperryville facilty for possible fishing show(FredK will follow up).

Uranium Mining/MarciaW- Keep informed of uranium mining bill status in VA.

The meeting raffle prize of three insulated stainless steel water bottles was won by AmyO.

There was a discussion regarding having one of the Jackson River litigants talk to chapter for ~10 minutes for case update/donations.

The meeting adjourned at 9:30pm.
