Just wanted to recognize Bill and Danny for their support of our Special Love Camp last weekend. I know we had our own Clean up day and picnic, but Bill shared that he, Danny and the volunteer from Northern Shen weren’t enough, they were very challenged in keeping up with the number of folks at the camp…If you can donate some of your time for the next event, please let us know via our web site…Thanks again Bill & Danny!!

Over the course of the past year, several classrooms of students raised trout from eggs to releasable “fry” as part of Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom Program. With sponsorship by the Rapidan Chapter, students at Cedar Lee Middle School, P.B Smith Elementary, Emerald Hill Elementary School, and Highland School received eggs that hatched, then cared for dozens of “baby” trout until of a size permitting release of the fish back into their natural habitat.

Students learn stream entomology as part of TU Youth Camp
The Tri-State TU Fishing Camp was completed on Friday, June 26, 2009 at Grave’s Mountain Lodge and was the most successful camp to date in the past 5 years the camp has been in operation. There were a total of 21 campers this year from states including West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The curriculum was cram-packed with such notable faculty members as C.J. Geraci (Smithsonian Institution) and Wes Jargowsky teaching about stream macro-invertebrates; Noel Gollehon on invasive species; Jeb Wofford and Paul Bugas of VDGIF on fish habitat,; fly tying with Doug Brune and Walt Cary; our own John Ross on stream restoration; Bill Bolin of Dominion Energy; TU’s own Jim Gracie on stream habitat restoration; and Kareen Beck-Herzog from Shenandoah National Park. The mix of campers included 3 girls and 19 boys with all levels of fly fishing experience (e.g. no experience to intermediate level). Continue Reading »
For over 30 years, Shenandoah National Park and the University of Virginia have been partners in the study of water quality for SNP’s entire watershed. This is recognized as the longest continuously conducted watershed research and monitoring program in the National Park System. Shenandoah Watershed Study (SWAS) data is gathered along with Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study (VTSSS) data which allows for a data set that encompasses most of the trout habitat in the Commonwealth.
VTSSS data is gathered every 10 years. The last study was done in 2000 and the Rapidan Chapter was a partner in the data gathering effort. Next spring, we will also have an opportunity to help with this important event.
We welcome Jeb Wofford to our November 4th meeting. He will discuss “Fish Monitoring and Management in the SNP”. These programs are directly affected by SWAS and VTSSS data.
Marcia Woolman will also introduce us to the data collection plan for the upcoming 2010 VTSSS study.
Won’t you please join us?

TU and others recently worked with the operators of Mount Vernon Farm to demolish a derelict dam across the river which impeded fish passage and interrupted the stream\’s natural hydrology.
